Marin Headlands, California
Nike Missile Site SF-88L
February 2020
The only fully restored Nike missile site in the country — Cold War history overlooking the Golden Gate.
From 1954 to 1974, a ring of Nike missile batteries defended San Francisco from Soviet air attack. SF-88L in the Marin Headlands is the only one fully restored and open to the public. Staffed by veterans and volunteers, it’s a remarkable window into the Cold War anxiety that shaped American life for decades.
